I would like to bring an awareness to you people out there that there's been a sharp increase of cases of teen pregnancies in the recent years. In a mag, reports have been saying that there's been a sharp increase of teen pregnancy. Back in 2001, it was reported that as many as 1700 teenaged gurls as well as young as 13, underwent abortions. Following year, this figure swelled to 2160 teenagers and there's beeen an annual increase. And in a recent newspaper report. an alarming trend of teenagers contracting STDS has increased by 20%. What does this mean? In Dr tan's speech, Deputy Head of the Sexually Transmitted Control offers his opinion,"More teenagers are having sex nowadays therefore the increase of STDS." He also cited that the easy access to pornography, sex materials and media factors are also contributing factors. "Its the glamourising of such images. Peer pressure is also another important factor. Friends get together and listen to other parties talk about their sexual encounters, making it all sound really exciting and intriguing." Dr tan also highlights the growing nonchalance teenagers are experiencing when it comes to such a matter. They take things for granted, have an attitude of not respect and care for a person. In 1974, Terminaion of Pregnancy Act states youths aged 13-21 do not have to seek parental approval for an abortion. This sparked controversial among the society here. In one letter written by Lucille Frances Ong to the newspaper, she opines, "In allowing abortions to be carried out by teenagers without their parents' knowledge, they are ultimately being encouraged to carry on a life of deception where their parents are concerned. Hence, i do not see how this can be good for the health or the safety of these teenagers in the long-term." However, the argument has never been clear-cut as the defense of the issue is as strong as the opposition and many a time, the line beween moral issue and what's right or wrong is incredibly thin. The strongest cas, however, for its defense is stated by Julia Wong, Public Affairs MAnager, Ministry of Health "....teenage gurls find themself in a desperate situation and likely to resort to desperate measures. For those who do not want their parents to know, a requirement of parental consent could force them to go for unlicensed practitioners, try potentially dangerous "medicines" purpoted to cause abortions or even suicide." So in an attempt to educate pregnant teens who eventually opted for abortion, unmarried gurls below 16 have to undergo counselling session which aims to educate them on issues, such as responsibile love, sexual behaviours and contraceptive methods. A minimum of 48 hours must also then elapse before a pregnancy can be terminated. this is to allow the gurls to review their situation in the light of the counselling provided. However, for teenagers to be able to truly seek understanding, family should be united and with their effort communicate with their children and teach them effective life lessons.
